Robert Thomas Shipley was born January 6, 1822, in Granger County, East Tennessee. With ordinary school advantages, his boyhood was devoted to learning the carpenter's trade with his father. He has been twice married, July 27, 1847, to Ann Rebecca Gore, and April 19, 1859, to Mrs. C. M. Donehew. By his first wife he has two children, James and George; by his second, Francis and Addie. James exhibiting a fine taste for cabinet-work, Mr. Shipley resolved to give him all the advantages in his power in that direction. He is now engaged in the manufacture and sale of all kinds of furniture at Jonesboro, Illinois. Mr. Shipley has been Deputy Sheriff of Union County, and served as First Lieutenant in the late war.
