Hon. William R. Morrison was born in Monroe County, Illinois, September 14, 1825. He was brought up on a farm and attended the common schools preparatory to studying at McKendree College; studied law and was admitted to practice in 1851; served as a private in the Mexican war, and in the late war organized a company in the Forty-ninth Illinois; in 1852, was elected Circuit Clerk of Union County; from 1854 to 1860, served as member of the State Legislature, acting two years as Speaker of the House, and was again elected to the House in 1870. He was elected by the Democratic party to the Thirty-eight, Forty-third and Forty-fourth Congresses, and is Chairman of the Committee of Ways and Means in the latter, at the present time.
